“Is it important for the courses to be professionally accredited?”

Yes, we believe it is very important.

Until 2001 it was mostly ‘pot luck’ for members of the public choosing a Feng Shui course or a consultant unless they had been lucky enough to have had a recommendation.

Because of the increased popularity of feng Shui, The Feng Shui Society established a system by which the public would be able to easily identify and select courses and consultants of a high standard of practice and who are working by a properly defined code of ethics.

This process took 3 years to achieve (1998 – 2001) and we were delighted that The Feng Shui Academy was the first school to have achieved national accreditation for both its Foundation Weekend Workshop (Key Concepts) and its Practitioner Training Course.

Most people contacting us at The Academy are more interested than ever in taking a properly recognised course or hiring a properly trained and recognised consultant. We firmly believe that accredited courses and consultants should be your first choice. Look out for the initials FSSA (Feng Shui Society Accredited).

The following is a copy of the letter sent to us from The Feng Shui Society approving our courses:

Course Duration:

The duration depends on the format taken. We offer two formats:

A) 'Attendance'

B) 'Distance Learning' (Home Study with Partial Attendance)

A) The ATTENDANCE approach: Course Code – PTC. (Accredited since 2001)

This approach comprises 3 modules totalling 15 days in all plus 4 days home study – a total of 19 days course-based study. The forthcoming dates for the modules can be found below The starting point for the course is generally in April or May each year and if you have missed the starting date or want to get started sooner you may wish to consider the
‘Home Study – Virtual Classroom' programme (below) which you can start at any time.

Personal 1-to-1 Tuition: With this format, Modules 1 and 2 can also be studied through 1 to 1 tuition with Robert Gray, our Course Director. This can be useful for those who cannot make the Attendnace dates for those modules or simply prefer personal tuition. If you cannot make just 1 of these modules and wish to have 1-to-1 tuition for a smaller section of the course this may also be possible. Please contact us. In either case, there is a cost implication.

B) The Distance Learning / Partial Attendance approach:

Course Code: PTC – DL (Accredited since 2002)

Although we have had many people from the different parts of the world complete our Attendance course we wanted to make this professional training available to those unable to afford the time or money to travel to the Academy several times in a year. After much consideration we developed a wonderful system where 65% of the course could be easily taught and assimilated at a distance (see ‘virtual classroom’ below), leaving the practical skills to be acquired in just one attendance session of 6 days (see dates below). This would then provide an affordable education of the highest standard for those for whom the time away and travelling (and their associated costs) might otherwise provide a problem. More than 80% of our students now take this option.
  

'Virtual Classroom' ~ our comprehensive course materials (approximately approx. 60 hours of live audio recordings of the entire classroom sessions plus extremely comprehensive notes) plus ongoing guidance and appraisal ensure that you are able to properly assimilate the information and get all your questions answered as you progress. With the notes and audio programme it’s as though you were in the classroom but you can press pause and take a break at any time you wish. You can make a note of any queries and get them answered at your leisure through your personal tutor over the phone or email.

How do I decide which format is best for me?

Only you can decide based on your personal circumstances as each approach has its own benefits:

Some may find it easier to focus on the course and assimilate the knowledge by being away from home.

1. Some people like the personal contact and social aspects of attending.
2. Some prefer to be able to ask questions live during the teaching session rather than waiting to email or call in with questions

BENEFITS OF THE DISTANCE LEARNING / PARTIAL ATTENDANCE APPROACH

On the other hand, the distance learning approach offers many benefits which the majority of our students have decided outweigh those above:

1. Flexibility - studying entirely at your own pace;
2. Repeat the same session as many times as you like by ‘re-listening’ to a part of the programme;
3. Much reduced accommodation and travel costs,
4. Much reduced time spent away from family or work. For a full explanation of how the Home Study programme works, see below.
5.  If booking this as your first course with us, you will receive the home study (distance learning) version of the foundation course (an essential part of the Practitioner course) free of charge, saving you £79. This offer is available for a limited period. However, If you book the foundation course on it's own first, you must pay for it separately.  

As you can see, it all depends on what appeals to you most. Can you tell me any more about the distance learning course?

The course enables busy parents, people living abroad or far away from the Midlands, or those finding it difficult to get time off work to train to Professional Consultant level. However, Feng Shui is not something that can be learned entirely at a distance, but with our years of experience in practitioner training we have carefully constructed a course which requires only one visit of 6 days to our Training Centre.

The attendance session, which is the last step in the Practitioner Training, is currently held once a year.

The rest of the course is completed beforehand at your leisure in the comfort of your own home and / or during otherwise wasteful traveling time. The only requirement is that you have to complete the home study section of the course before you can take the attendance session. As a guideline but depending on the amount of free time you have we advise that you commence the home study at least 3 months before the attendance session. To help you plan how many weeks / months you will need, we have calculated that your total study time for the home study section of the course will be approximately 96 hours.

How long will the distance learning course take me to complete?

That really depends on you, as this course puts you firmly in control. The course comprises several modules of distance study comprising about 50 hours of audio material (or 60 hours if you haven’t yet completed our foundation course). This is complemented by comprehensive course notes. The flexibility of the course means that you can study at your own pace working very quickly or more leisurely ensuring that the programme fits in with your home life. You can start the course at home as soon as you wish. You will need to have completed all the home study work before taking the attendance session. For most people working full time we would expect that this would take around 5 months (20 hours per month).

And is the distance learning format also accredited?

Yes, it is. Below is a copy of the letter of approval from The Feng Shui Society.

The Feng Shui Academy is still the only UK school to have its Distance Learning Practitioner Training Programme accredited.

In addition to taking the home study course, Home Study students will attend a 6 day Practical Session in Leicestershire.

Who’s going to be doing the teaching?

Robert Gray teaches the whole Practitioner course and is the voice you will hear on the Home Study format since the audio programme was recorded live in the classroom. Frédérique Cooke assists when needed and takes care of the accreditation procedure.

Frédérique Cook:

Having worked as a Foreign Languages teacher for many years, Frédérique has a gift for imparting knowledge in a clear and comprehensible manner. She has been a Tai Chi teacher for more than 15 years and has therefore acquired an extremely sensitive appreciation of Chi energy, which is the basis of Feng Shui.

Having graduated from The Feng Shui Academy in 1999 she now brings her own unique teaching style, humour and years of experience of working with ‘energy’ to the world of Feng Shui.

Frédérique teaches the Foundation Course and the Professional Space Clearing ‘special interest course’ in Devon and usually supports on Module 4 of the PTC. She also runs our administrative office and is involved with student support and assessments.

How much does the course cost?

1. Accredited Home study course with 1 week of attendance: £1695.  If booking this as your first course with us, you will receive the home study (distance learning) version of the foundation course (an essential part of the Practitioner course) free of charge, saving you £79. This offer is available for a limited period. However, If you book the foundation course on it's own first, you must pay for it separately.                                                                          
2. Accredited Regular Attendance course: £1995
3. Personal 1 to 1 Tuition: £2995 (Please note that your 1 to 1 tuition will be for the first two modules only - 9 days in total. Dates will be arranged between yourself and Robert to suit both parties. Your final module of 6 days will be in a group environment with a fixed date - held once a year - see dates above). Foundation course can be supplied free of charge on home syudy format OR £395 as 1 to 1 tuition.
   

Can I spread my payments?

Yes, the course can either be paid for in full or standing order payments can be spread over several months. This can be done with credit card payments as well as with a standing order with the bank. As you would expect paying the whole fee in one payment is the cheapest option:

Can I get Funding for this course?

Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Young People’s Learning Agency will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated. What about accommodation and food costs?

Please note that accommodation and food costs are not included in the course fees. 

The course will take place in or close to Rothley, in the Charnwood Forest area of Leicestershire roughly half way between Leicester and Loughborough. We'll undertake part of your training out and about in the beautiful surrounding countryside. Leicester is very central and as such is easily accessible from most locations in Britain: it is just over an hour away from central London by train or under 2 hours by car. For those flying in, it is just a 25 minutes taxi ride from East Midlands airport, around 1 hour from Birmingham and Luton airports and less than 2 hours from Heathrow and Stansted airports.

There are various hotels and B&B's available in the area ranging from £35 - £75, We will provide a list with your welcome pack when you book.

Are there any discounts for those on benefits?

Because of venue and other rising costs and the fact that we have relatively small class sizes and provide support throughout the course we don't have much profit to 'play with'.

We don’t have any set reduced fees for these cases, however, we will review each case on it's own merits and may be able to offer preferential rates. Proof of status will be required. If you want to apply, please write to us explaining you situation and we will do our best to help.

I would like to take the course but I simply can’t afford it. What can I do?

1) Firstly, consider taking the ‘easy payment’ option which allows you to spread your payments.
